Put yourself in a promoter's or a club owners shoes. Your spot is set, the date is set, the whole plan is set. Now u just need to hire the DJ.
Do you go for the "BIg Name" and pay a fortune and hope they draw in big numbers to pay for their fee? If you don't pack the club you could loose high hundreds or thousands. But then again if you promote it right you could be turning people away at some point of the night. A full house is the goal isn't it?
Do you go for the "Safe Choice" and go with someone you personally know? Someone that you know deep down can keep everybody entertained the whole evening and you don't have to worry about them doing their job. You'll probably pay a respectable but reasonable fee but you know what your getting for your money and your cool with that.
Or do you go with some "Bargain Basement" DJ that practically does it for free. Usually these are DJ's that are just starting out or they just need any type of work just for the exposure / experience. Are they just paying their dues? Are they truly talented? Could this be a disaster waiting to happen? Well, people hire these guys all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
What would you do? Are you counting on these DJ's to bring in your customers? Or are you just hiring them to play music? Let's hear your perspective.

Permalink Reply by Xavier on March 26, 2012 at 12:29pm As a promoter I can tell you that the choice of DJ involves more than one factor put for us the 3 top factors include:
1. The quality, size and diversity of their music collections AND their ability use it properly
2. A team player meaning a willingness to promote leading to the ability to get followers out to an event.
3. Reliability..drama free, showing up on time ready to work.
Further still, "Big Names" do not automatically gurantee people will come unless the DJ is a "team player" a fact that needs to be discussed and negotiated for specifics in advance. A "Safe Choice" is everything you outlined and more because oftentimes they're willing to work with you above an beyond the call of duty to make the event a success. Same thing is true for the "Bargain Basement DJ" which I prefer to call "Up-and-Coming DJ" because everyone has to start somewhere and it's important to give new talent an opportunity and in a competitive market, the willingness to work for less does not always reflect the quality of the services. However, if you've never heard them spin it would be smart to hire another DJ from one of the other categories as backative:)
Thanks for contributing to the discussion Xavier. It's nice to get a promoters take on it. I agree with u. I've gotten to the point where if a DJ is not a "team player" i dont even want them to spin for me anymore. Alot of DJ's are extremely talented but they just dont have a folowing and sadly it doesn't pay to have them to spin when i can have an :up n coming" DJ, that obviously must be talented, but knows the value of promoting and marketing themselves with todays social media. There are just too many DJ's out there today and if u cant seperate yourself from the pack you'll never get noticed or build a true fan base that supports u and follows u whether ur spinning at a club, commercial radio, or internet radio. Club owners now hire bartenders according to their following and promoters bring in smaller promoters to help with their network. Thats just the way it works today. If i stop promoting myself or my business for even a day or two, i feel the energy drop. Thats what the grind is all about. You either get it or u don't. Thanks again.
